K'gari (formerly Fraser Island) is the world's largest sand island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located off Queensland, Australia, famous for its unique rainforests growing on sand, freshwater lakes (like Lake McKenzie), 75 Mile Beach, colored sands, and rich Butchulla Aboriginal culture, accessible primarily by 4WD vehicles and ferry from Hervey Bay or Rainbow Beach. Lake McKenzie (Boorangoora) on K'gari (Fraser Island) is a famous, stunning freshwater lake known for its brilliant blue, crystal-clear water and pure, white silica sand, formed entirely from rainwater and filtered by the sand, making it a popular, pristine swimming spot with picnic areas and camping facilities in the Great Sandy National Park.
A must-see attraction at Queensland’s Fraser Coast is Hervey Bay’s famous and historic Urangan Pier – it’s one of the longest in Australia. It stretches for almost one kilometre into the ocean.
Hervey Bay offers unparalleled humpback whale watching from July to October, a protected bay where whales rest, play, and nurse calves during migration, leading to unique, close-up "mugging" encounters where whales curiously approach boats for a look. Experience majestic breaches, tail slaps, and spy hops in calm, clear waters, often with calves, from expert-led tours featuring commentary, underwater hydrophones, and water-level viewing platforms for unforgettable, interactive experiences with these gentle giants.
A quick flight from the Hervey Bay Airport, Lady Elliot Island is the first island on the Great Barrier Reef. This coral cay is world renowned as the home of the manta ray with over 700 individual manta rays known to be living in the surrounding waters. Lady Elliot Island is also teeming with turtles who lazily swim these waters year-round and don’t mind the curiosity of visitors. A selfie with a turtle is a must-do but wait till you get home to post it and enjoy the digital detox. You can day trip to the island or stay overnight in Eco certified accommodation, snorkelling just metres from where you lay your head. Lady Elliot Island is an experience you’ll be talking about for years to come.
If getting up for sunrise just feels a bit too difficult while on holiday then there are some good options for sunset instead. Try a sunset cruise or there are plenty of bays and outcrops that offer a good vantage point. The wharf at Urangan is an interesting one facing back towards town but the curve of Gattakers Bay offers a variety of other options for watching the sunset over the water. It's also a great spot for a BBQ.
The Pier markets are on twice a week, the Wednesday market is around half the size of the weekend one and the focus is mainly on craft and clothes, the Saturday market adds many more options from local artisans, entrepreneurs, community based groups and small businesses offering fresh produce, great food and coffee, quality home crafted creations, fashion and plants and live music."
